Yes, we really can!
Now that Massachusetts has elected a Republican to the US Senate for the first time since the 1972 election, is it time for Obama to change his slogan to "Yes, we can make even Massachusetts elect a Republican!"?

Read Harry Kemelman's "Someday the Rabbi Will Leave" (1985), about a young man who tries to get elected into the Massachusetts senate. His district near Boston is so Republican that Democrats don't even bother to campaign there, thus the real struggle is for the nomination of the Republican candidate.
I suppose it's more a matter of Kennedy kicking the bucket than who was president at the time.
