The peaceful ones ran out of explosives

British police arrest 8 on terror charges.

In contrast to the now-traditional improvised explosive devices on public transportation, these people planned to kidnap and behead a hostage and post the video on the Net.

Hairdresser weirdness

Probably have written about this before...

Is it just me, or do other people find that their hair feels weird right after visiting a hairdresser? I don't mean any kind of hairstyle changes, just that the texture feels very strange. It probably has something to do with unusual shampoo or conditioner or drying or handling. I usually wash my hair as soon as I get home, and the weirdness disappears.

Maxinetti, part 2

Called Maxinetti. They are claiming that the customers don't have to pay the TV tax unless the customers actually use the PCTV service, and that Viestintävirasto has told them so.

I don't believe them. Asked Viestintävirasto, am waiting for their response.

If (and, so far, it's an "if") Maxinetti is lying, I really want to make them compensate their customers for this. Not just myself, but everybody who has to change their ISP because of this.

Dear Lord, we need a bit of smiting here

Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov has vowed to ban a gay parade and called it "satanic".

He spoke about the evils of homosexuality at the Orthodox church conference in Kremlin. Church. Heh. The man has been a Communist party member since 1968 and until... well, I guess until those times when being so became detrimental to his political career, which was probably in the 1990s. Probably the best argument against the existence of an almighty and just god is that this fucker still hasn't gotten a lightning up his ass.

Maxinetti and viestintävirasto: screwing the customers together

Maxinetti has offered all its broadband customers PCTV (TV access through the Internet). One does not need a TV card or anything, one just has to install some program and then one can watch TV in a browser.

Viestintävirasto, not surprisingly, declared that all the Maxinetti subscribers should pay the TV tax from now on.

Considering that none of the Maxinetti subscribers actually asked for it I have a few of questions:

- How does Viestintävirasto feel about TV:s installed right outside an apartment window, the screen against the glass, and fully viewable by people in the apartment?

- Is Viestintävirasto going to give the current Maxinetti customers some grace time to switch providers? (Yeah, I know one can just forget to mention the whole thing to them, but I would like an official opinion.)

- If Viestintävirasto believes that all the Maxinetti customers should start paying TV tax immediately, will Maxinetti reimburse them for it?

- In either case, how is Maxinetti planning to reimburse the customers who are going to have to leave it after this? Are they going to make sure that they stop billing right after the customer switches providers so that there is no double billing? Are they going to let the people who have 12-month contract break the contract before it ends? Are they going to reimburse the installation fee?

The tiny minority of extremists

Young British Muslims are way more radical than their parents.

That's not surprising, of course. Most of the parents have actually lived under a partially implemented Sharia and are therefore a lot less enthusiastic about it. When I was a teenager the people of my parents' generation tended to dislike Stalin because they were born in Stalin's times and grew up right after his death; a fair lot (not the majority, I hope) of people my age thought Stalin was really cool.

Considering the subject matter and the numbers it is, however, a bit alarming.

13 percent of young (16-24) Muslims said they "admired" organisations such as Al Qaeda which are prepared to "fight the West".

36 per cent of 16-to-24-year-olds thought converting from Islam to another religion should be punished by death, compared with 19 per cent of 55s and over.

Here is the full report.

Life

It's cold outside. Brr. I don't like winter.

The weekend was quite social: a friend from the Net whom I'd never seen in person before, a friend whom I see quite often, a couple of friends whom I see too rarely and a couple of old acquaintances whom I see way too rarely.

An evening in Hilpeä Hauki demonstrated that a) Helsinki is small, and friends of your new friends turn out to be old acquaintances of yours, b) the place is still a bit too smoky in spite of a functional non-smoking section, c) Rochefort beers improve as the number after their name increases. (The number itself is some kind of an archaic density unit).

Krav Maga and a hangover is not a nice combination.

Sleeeeepy...

Yeah, and we eat babies, too

At some point Dilbert stopped being funny because it became to close to reality, or rather reality became too close to it. It looks like the same fate is about to befall Borat.

Some Israeli newspaper was having some kind of promotion, and released a number of green balloons. Wind carried the balloons over the border to Lebanon, where the official news agency claimed that they were poisoned balloons dispersed by IDF aircraft.

Yep, that's totally how I'd do it. If I wanted to attack the neighboring country with a poison gas, I'll put it into neon-green balloons covered with some writing in my language, release them over the border and just hope that some morons would be stupid enough to catch them, pop them open and inhale the gas. Sure thing. Great plan.

But wait: "the Lebanese media reported that some civilians were hospitalized after inhaling the gas in the balloons." Oy vey. OK, once again: you get some green balloons from the enemy territory, you are dumb enough to believe that they are a weapon delivery system, your government tells you that they are full of poison gas, so you catch one, pop it open, and inhale?

Enriching the immigrants' culture

Was changing from bus to subway in Ruoholahti on Friday, and suddenly got a feeling of being followed. Disregarded it as usual (I am fairly paranoid to begin with and a lot of people are going to the subway, and most of them, I would like to think, are not doing so to follow me).

On the escalator the follower passed me and actually turned back to look at me. A Middle Eastern looking man, about thirty years old. He headed towards the center of the train that was waiting. I headed for the front.

Thirty seconds later he found me in the front of the train and sat on the bench opposite me, even though most pairs of benches around us were totally empty, which is a bit of a breach of public transportation etiquette anywhere I've ever been.

"Hi."
"Hi."
"What's your name?"
"Why do you want to know?"
"I want to know."
"I know what you want, and I am trying to tell you that I am not interested."
"Where are you going? Are you Finnish?"

Being in a somewhat aggressive mood, I suppressed the urge to say "I am going to an orgy to have wild sex with somebody who is not you, nosy freak, and no, I am fucking Chinese" and moved to another bench, after which he kind of understood my point and buggered off.

There are many of those. They are always African or Middle Eastern. They come up to me in the streets or in public transportation and try to start conversation by asking a lot of nosy questions. I usually cut to the chase and tell them that I know what they want and I am not interested. They usually try to press the issue. Sometimes they deny any sexual interest and tell me that they are just looking for friends. I don't believe them much, especially since my suggestions that they should go and be friendly with that friendly-looking guy over there are never met with any visible enthusiasm.

You can get rid of about 90% of them just by saying "emmä puhu englantia", but often - always when I am not feeling aggressive, unsocial or tired - I get a feeling that I should explain to them that this is just not a very good approach (meaning that the problem is not just that I don't happen to be interested, but that this approach would scare off most of the women who potentially are). I don't think those guys are purposefully obnoxious, they are just sorely in need of a clue. At some point I started asking some of them whether this approach to finding women actually works. The answer was overwhelmingly "no". I recommended that they try to observe what the Finnish men do, especially the ones who actually do find women, and they to emulate them, but, having very little experience in picking women up, did not think of anything better to say. Any good ideas on what I should tell them?

The only specific points that come to my mind:

- the chances of picking up anyone on the public transportation are small, and on the street close to nil. Finns usually go to bars and clubs and suchlike if they want to pick up total strangers,
- if you want to chat with strangers on public transportation, it is best done by commenting on the world around you. It is certainly not done by asking a lot of nosy questions. There are questions that you can ask (for example if they are clearly coming from some particular event you can ask them about the event, or if they have a weird-looking dog with them you can ask them about the breed), but don't start the conversation with questions about their name, address, marital status, etc.

Any more good advice for clueless horny foreigners?

OK, we have a winner for the Clueless Award of the month

Father Kills Daughter; Doubted Virginity

To make a short story even shorter, a father shot his 17-year-old daughter in the head four times on suspicion on her not being a virgin, even though she had been just examined by a doctor and found to be a virgin. (Autopsy also found her to be a virgin. I really don't wanna know how the girls who were born without any hymen to speak of manage to survive in Jordan.)

Normally I'd post this as a comment on a particular culture, but this is way too much even for Jordan.

And the Clueless Award of the month goes to:

"A state forensic pathologist, who works at the National Institute of Forensic Medicine in Amman where an autopsy was performed, said in a phone interview that the girl had run away from home several times for unknown reasons."

For unknown reasons? How about because daddy was a homicidal psychotic freak?

One thing I wish Google had...

One service I would really like Google to have is where you give it a query and a URL, and it responds with a number that is the order in which the URL is question comes up in this particular query.

Somebody found this blog while searching for anal+sex, and I really wanna know how many pages the poor person had to wade through in order to get to this one. I mean, there are about 13 400 000 pages that come up in response to this particular query, and I'd love to know whether mine was, say, number 1 214 678 or number 12 146 784. I'd be surprised if my blog made it into the first million of the hits, I assume they are occupied by pages that actually discuss the topic.

I saw a dream

This doesn't happen to me often, and I wish it didn't happen at all, because they are always nightmares. This one involved a rotating mosque (no, doesn't make sense to me either), a mosque decorated with Christmas lights, a library, some corpses, some plastic bags and a number of people who rose from the dead (including some that are currently alive in real life). All of the above was really scary.

I really don't wanna know what is it that my brain is processing at night.

A little more shameless self-advertisement

I put the Out-Of_Context Imam song on last.fm now. Downloads way faster than from my server.

Gonna put it on Youtube, too, as soon as I figure out how to make a video out of a mp3.

Damn, I give up

(Via Jihad Watch)

Every time I try to parody Omar Bakri Mohammed, the man himself pulls a better one. You just can't parody the fucker.

In his latest pearl of wisdom he says that "When you start to ask Muslims to join your Army and your police you are making a grave mistake. That British Muslim who joins the police today will one day read the Koran and will have an awakening." Awakening? What does he mean? I thought Islam was the religion of peace.

"Those moderates are one day going to be practising Muslims. Now what happens if they are British police or in the Army and they have weapons? How much information do they have about you that they will use to serve the global struggle?"

OK, check: don't let practicing or potentially-practicing Muslims into police and armed forces and don't give them weapons. If some kaffir politician said that he would be immediately condemned for Islamophobia - I wonder what will be the public reaction to Bakri Mohammed.

Once more, a hint to the Powers That Be: if a person is persecuted for Islamic extremism in Saudi Arabia, you can conclude that their presence in a civilized country is "not conductive to the public good" without supporting them on taxpayer money for 20 years first.

Whee! A real song!

Unbelievable as it is, one very generous and musically gifted person wrote the music for the lyrics I wrote a few days ago, played, sang it with a friend and recorded it.

Here it is. Since my bandwidth is limited I'd appreciate it if people who happen to like it copy it to their own hard disk as opposed to listening from mine every time.

You can spread it anywhere you want as long as you acknowledge the artists, who wish to be known as Howling Imam and the Headless Kuffar.

"... and in other news, British football hooligans are threatening to boycott the World Cup..."

On January 7th a group of Muslims on their way back from Mecca were returning to Detroit on a Northwest Airlines flight, and were not allowed to board. The airline is saying that they arrived too late for boarding. They are saying that they didn't.

Now Imam Hassan Al-Qazwini, head of the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, Michigan and one of the people who were not allowed to board, is threatening to organize a boycott of Northwest Airlines by Islamic organizations in the US.

Errr... is that really a good idea? I am not claiming to know what exactly happened between the Northwest Airlines, flying (or rather non-flying, in this case) Muslim pilgrims and the Gods of Fucked-Up Airplane Boarding, but when you think that somebody behaves like they don't want you in the first place, is boycotting them a bright idea? In the eye of my mind I can already see huge advertising billboards "Fly with Northwest - all Muslims boycott us!" Guys, you are about to make Northwest the most popular airline ever.

Can you please also boycott BA? I fly on them often, and I am pretty sure that they have offended Muslims and the Prophet somehow at some point.

The out-of-context imam song

Don't judge this harshly, I was fairly drunk when I wrote it. Supposed to be sung to the tune of West Side Story's "Gee, officer Krupke".

ADDED LATER: Now available as an actual song by artists who'd like to be known as Howling Iman and the Headless Kuffar.

IMAMS

Dear kindly Western people,
You gotta understand -
It's lack of understanding
That gets us out outta hand.
You quote us out of context
When we say "kill kuffaar!"
That's why, of course, we blow up a subway car.

Gee, infidel swine, we are very upset;
We never have respect that an
Imam oughta get.
We ain't no extremists,
We're misunderstood.
We are fully moderate and good!
We are good!
We are good, we are good,
We are totally good.
We are multiculturally good.

ABU LABAN

Dear kindly Western people,
You have yourselves to blame:
You drew cartoons of Prophet
Without a trace of shame.
And then twelve evil pictures
Did not incite enough.
So we added three more
To make the things more rough.

AHMED AKKARI

Dear kindly Danish people,
Please don't misunderstand:
When Israel is bombing
And shit has hit the fan
Please give me your protection
Under the red-and-white -
Oh shit, I burned all your flags
I found the other night.

OMAR BAKRI MOHAMMED

My dear fellow clerics,
Try to avoid the worst:
Before inciting murder,
Get citizenship first.
I said the subway bombings
Were very, very cute.
Holy shit - now my ass is in Beirut!

ABU USAMAH

All women are dumb bitches,
Avoid them if you can,
Because they have some hormones
Unlike the real men.
You also should kill faggots
And former Muslims too,
But stay away from pigs
Because a pig might be a Jew!

GREEN LANE MOSQUE CHOIR

My dear British people,
Don't blame us for this shit,
We are completely blameless when
The preacher is a twit.
He only preaches here,
Has naught to do with us,
And he hasn't even
Blown up a single bus!

He's taken out of context,
He wasn't preaching hate,
He only meant that gays should
Be killed in Muslim states.
Don't kill the gays in Britain
Or even apostates -
Instead let's work on making
UK a Muslim state.

You damn Channel 4, we are very upset;
You don't give us the context a
Good mosque oughta get.
We ain't no extremists,
We're misunderstood.
We are fully moderate and good!
We are good!
We are good, we are good,
We are totally good.
We are multiculturally good.

SHEIKH AL-HILALI

My dear Muslim children,
It sucks to be alive.
I'd love to be a martyr,
But now I'm sixty-five.
Please meet Allah before me
As quickly as you can.
Only by exploding
You become a real man.

Australians are awful,
Let's tell it to the news:
Their ancestors are convicts
And some are even Jews.
Their women do not wear
A burqa at the beach.
And they print out of context
Most everything I preach.

IMAM CHOIR

You fucking kuffaar, we are very upset;
You don't give us the context a
Good imam oughta get.
We ain't no extremists,
We're misunderstood.
We are fully moderate and good!
We are good!
We are good, we are good,
We are totally good.
We are multiculturally good.

Answerers anonymous?

"Hi, I am Vera, and sometimes I give serious answers to clearly jocular questions."

Seriously, if there is a self-help group for people who give serious (and occasionally seriously unpleasant) answers to the questions that are clearly meant as a joke, I might consider signing up. I really need to stop doing this.

OTOH, the people who ask clearly unpleasant things as a joke should consider starting a group of their own.

Another one out of context

Another sheikh, Feiz Mohammed, is pissing Australians off.

"We want to have children and offer them as soldiers defending Islam," he said on video. "Teach them this: there is nothing more beloved to me than wanting to die as a mujahid. Put in their soft, tender hearts the zeal of jihad and a love of martyrdom."

You'll never guess what he is saying now: he has been taken out of context.

I am so starting a t-shirt company now. The t-shirts will say "I am always taken out of context", "Everything I say is out of context", "I am out of context" and "Please put me back in context".

"The jihad I speak of is not one of violence," he said. "It is one of personal struggle against things like mischievousness, temptation and personal harm."

Sheesh, dude. This is so 2002. I thought nobody has called jihad a personal struggle since Bali bombings and that theater in Moscow. Your personal struggle is just so exposive...

Breaking news: Islam widely misunderstood at moderate mosques in the UK

This week UK's Channel 4 has aired a documentary where undercover reporters visited mosques with moderate reputation and filmed preachers there. You can find the documentary on Youtube (just search for "UK Mosques") or look in your favorite torrent place for "undercover mosques". Here is the transcript.

The idea of the document was that they did not go to the known extremist places like Finsbury Park mosque, but to the places generally known as moderate, such as the Green Lane mosque, which has regular interfaith outreach meetings and suchlike. Damn. If those guys are moderate, I'd hate to see the extremists.

The place where they have filmed the most, Green Lane mosque, has issued a statement basically saying that (all together now, children, you know the drill) they were misunderstood and taken out of context. "Dispatches failed to adequately differentiate between the application of Islamic Shariah in an Islamic State and its application within a minority Muslim community in modern day Britain," they say. This means "when our preachers say that apostates and gays should be killed, we mean that they should be killed in an Islamic state and not in the UK". Fair enough, it's a big distinction, even though this statement as such is not likely to earn you brownie points with the tolerance brigade, or indeed anyone sane. However, you forgot to mention that your preachers also preach about turning Britain into an Islamic state, which would make this distinction a bit moot.

They and their defenders also keep saying that normally they are totally moderate and peaceful and that the radical preachers who occasionally preach there have nothing to do with them and express views that they do not agree with. Interesting. Abu Usamah at-Thahabi has preached there fairly often. I can't easily imagine a Reform or Conservative synagogue that would allow Rabbi Ovadia Yosef preach there, much less on a regular basis, and probably most Orthodox synagogues wouldn't either. Can anybody imagine Fred Phelps preaching in Tuomiokirkko? And Tuomiokirkko saying that they didn't have anything to do with it afterwards?

If I had to quote every nasty thing Abu Usamah at-Thahabi said I'd have to quote half of the transcript, but the basic idea is "kill apostates, kill gays, women are inferior because they are suffering from hormones, infidels really suck and we should hate them, and just wait till we take the power". That, incidentally, is the same guy who used to talk about tolerance and say things like "at the same time, there is an appreciation for those open-minded people who judge everyone individually" to the mainstream media, at least until the mainstream journalists found Google. OK, Abu Usamah, I can judge you individually; I am not, however, sure that you still appreciate it.

Most of the webpages that advertise Islam tend to say that the mistreatment of women or any other badness in Islamic countries do not come from Islam, but from the traditional local pre-Islamic cultures that Islam failed to eradicate (which probably give them the weakest culture eradication record for the last 1400 years). In short, anything that is bad is not Islamic: it's Arabic, Persian, Pakistani, Somalian, you name it.

Problem is, Abu Usamah at-Thahabi is not an Arab, an Iranian, a Pakistani or a Somali. He is an American, born and raised in New Jersey and converted to Islam as an adult. Now, correct me if I am wrong, but I have always thought that the traditional local pre-Islamic New Jerseyan culture did not include throwing gay people down from mountains, and that's not only due to the unfortunate lack of proper mountains. Sure, the full equality has not been achieved, they only have civil unions instead of real marriage and being gay still can endanger your chances to become the governor of the state, but throwing gays off the mountains, no, definitely not, and not even off the roofs. Hating the kuffaar and killing the apostates - no, definitely not the local culture either.

Blood

It feels weird to wake up and find blood dripping down from your refrigerator. Especially after watching a bit of a horror series before going to sleep.

I opened the fridge almost expecting to see a dead body, but all this river of blood came from a kilo of meat that I was trying to defrost.

I thought both the meat package and the fridge were supposed to be airtight. Silly me.

Mizzbrazil again

Yesterday I went to the police station to file a crime report about my old friend Mizzbrazil, which takes money but does not send the stuff. The police was quite an entertaining experience in itself, but I won't go into details here. The report has been filed.

The word Mizzbrazil should always be found by the search engines next to the words fraud, scam and thieves, and of course also QBrasil. QBrasil LTD is a company that owns Mizzbrazil and used to be Mizzbrazil. QBrasil also has the same address and phone as Mizzbrazil, and seems to be run by the same two people, Rod Da Silva and Rob Zdero.

Mizzbrazil was apparently a legitimate company selling CDs and DVDs until last summer, when they kept taking money but stopped sending the stuff. I'd like to hear from their other customers to see if there is something we can do about them. As of yesterday their domain has been suspended, so probably somebody somewhere is doing something.

Why is nail polish red?

Why is red the traditional color for nail polish? (In the sense that the overwhelming majority of them are some shade or red or similar colors, and blues/greens/whites/blacks are a lot less common and more or less recent.)

I mean, most traditional makeup colors (except maybe eyeshadow, which either has no traditional color or the tradition has already disintergrated so totally that I am unable to identify it) are either close to natural (at least, somebody's natural, if not necessarily the wearer's) or an exaggerated version of it. Lipsticks are red because lips are red; powders come more or less in human skin colors; blushes are pink; mascaras are black. What is the deal with red nail polish, though? Human nails are not red, or even redder than the surrounding skin.

Ouch

I am sore all over. Had my first Krav Maga class in a long time yesterday, and everything hurts, even the parts I did not know existed.

I imagined I'd go there again today, but I guess I'll have to wait till later in the week. Too sore.

"Hey, he did not even give him a blowjob!"

Young love finds no understanding.

Rabbi Moshe Aryeh Friedman of the Neturei Karta sect shared just one passionate kiss with Iran's president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and his wife has already left him and asked for a divorce.

That's fundies for you. They divorce you just for kissing a homicidal lunatic, sheesh.

It is not known what Ahmadinejad's wife thinks about him kissing Moshe Aryeh "Monica" Friedman.

"We ain't no delinquents, we're misunderstood..."

Hee. Al-Hihhuli (my friend Gniko invented him this lovely new name) is already saying that he has been taken out on context and misunderstood.

Everyone is so sick and tired of him that the Australian Federation of Islamic Council's legal adviser Haset Sali decided to throw a Hitler card at him. If this were Usenet this would kill the thread, but I have a feeling that al-Hihhuli is not about to shut up.

Healthy food

I figured I should start posting cake recipes. This is my regular really heavy chocolate cake recipe (aka "plutoniumkakku"), and this is a much-lighter one with caramel and whipped cream that I made a few times lately.

A word of warning: your cholesterol can go up just from reading the recipes.

Told ya

Australia's Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone and NSW Premier Morris Iemma said that if al-Hilali doesn't like Australia he shouldn't bother coming back.

NSW Community Relations Commission (CRC) chairman Stepan Kerkyasharian has told al-Hilali to "keep his mouth shut'.

Don't these "firebrand clerics" (lovely euphemism, never means anything other than "Islamist thug") ever follow what happens to other firebrand clerics? One could think that the example of Omar Bakri Mohammed would make them start thinking, but I guess thinking is not one of their stronger points.

Granted, Omar Bakri Mohammed was not a British citizen and al-Hilali is an Australian citizen (although this can change: the Immigration Minister has already hinted that she doubts that he really meant what he said in his naturalization oath, and there is ample evidence from his public speeches that he in fact did not), but seriously: if your country's officials tell you to bugger off, not bother coming back and keep your mouth shut, and tell so publicly, to the press, this is a subtle hint that you have seriously run out of everybody's patience and goodwill, and the officials know it.

Here we go again

Our dear old friend, Taj el-Din "cat meat" al-Hilali (aka Australia's Grand Mufti), is at it again. Once again he gets himself totally misunderstood and taken out of context.

In an interview on Egyptian TV Al-Hilali reminded his listeners that the white Australians arrived in Australia as convicts and said "We (Muslims) came as free people. We bought our own tickets. We are entitled to Australia more than they are."

Oh, please. It's just like me dissing someone's ancestors for having been geeks who spent their time writing snarky blogs. Now whose ass got convicted and jailed in Egypt for smuggling? Who overstayed his tourist visa? By 24 years, no less? Who was driving an uninsured and unregistered car and assaulted police when they pointed it out? Who was a member of Muslim Brotherhood when it was banned in Egypt? Who, at the age of 63, encouraged children to do suicide bombings?

This very entitled new Australian still does not speak much English after his 24 years in the country to which he is so entitled.

I think if the fucker were a little bit brighter he would have figured that this is not the moment to remind Australians that you can get rid of highly undesirable people by sending them overseas. They've started discussing the matter all by themselves three months ago after his previous public appearance. Which was, of course, taken out of context. Somebody please send the man a t-shirt saying "everything I say is taken out of context".

Al-Hilali was named "Muslim Man of the Year" for 2005 at the first Australian Muslim Achievement Awards by Mission of Hope. Kind of makes me wonder what the rest of them were up to.

"Jihad is my hobby! Love affair with a horse! Explosive passion guaranteed!"

(Via LGF.)

Usually it's kind of silly to make fun of others' personals, but this is just so good:

"My intrests are Islam, reading, fiqh,Jihad and fighting i the cause of Allah, history, martialarts, mountains, computers, gadgets, internet, horse back riding,Driving fast bikes, current affairs, brainstorming,science,traveling,financial/investing,camping,walking,jogging,and hiking and spending quality time with my mum ,my family and truest friends."

What? No romantic walks on the beach, beheading infidels, fishing, making improvised explosive devices and rollerskating? Man, you are so narrow-minded!

"I have alawys had a loveaffair with Horse"

Oh, dear. How does your goat feel about that? And are you quite sure you want to move on to women?

He has jihad as a hobby and a love affair with a horse. And god only knows what does "spending quality time with my mum" means for this horse-lover (OTOH she is probably not a horse. I hope.). I am sure all the women are just lining up.

Yesterday got an email from a relative complaining that their palm tree broke under all the snow (in Jerusalem). Felt like replying "and all our reindeer died of heat".

Taking a break from alcohol

No, I am not. I have just read Janka's entry and am thinking of social implications.

Janka said that the news of somebody taking a break from alcohol are not usually met with encouragement but with cider, amusement and disbelief that one can do it. This made me feel vaguely guilty - I sort of suspect that this is the fault of people like myself, who sometimes say "I am not drinking any alcohol ever again!" after a night of excessive drinking, and don't mean it even at the moment when they say it. I never really mean it - for me it's sort of like saying "I am not eating anything ever again!" after having eaten too much.

There is a conversation in that entry about whether or not people ask more questions about a person having a long-term (weeks or months) break from alcohol or about a person who normally drinks just not doing so at some party. For my part, somebody's break from alcohol almost always makes me wonder why (although very often there is no why - a person just wants a break) whereas a person just not drinking at some party does not usually attract my attention at all. Sorry if I ever asked nosy questions from anyone. From the other side of the issue, I really have no basis for comparison, because I've never taken a long-term break from alcohol, but I have been to many events where I opted not to drink alcohol, usually without causing much reaction in anyone.

Personally I find it most difficult not to drink when just spending an evening sitting down at home chatting with somebody. These are the situations when drinking is expected, not drinking is noticeable and questioned, copious amounts of good alcohol are available without getting up, and I sort of have this need to be drinking something all the time, and these are also the situations when I don't normally want to avoid alcohol, just to drink less. I usually resort to drinking a large cup of tea after each glass of wine, this works. Not drinking - or drinking little - at a party or a bar or anywhere where I have to get my ass up in order to refill my glass is easy. Ordering a water instead of a beer with a meal in a restaurant is even easier.

I've never been in a social environment that disapproves of totally alcohol-free people. People ask curious questions, of course, but not drinking alcohol at all is taken as a harmless personal eccentricity. I've never felt any disapproval for abstaining from drinking for some particular night. The only time I ran into serious disapproval for not drinking alcohol, I was, in fact, drinking:

When I was young (19 or 20) and used to hang out with seriously-drinking Russian, American and Russian-American people in Boston (on the second thought, they probably did not drink much more than my Finnish friends, but somehow my Finnish friends never get the bright idea to piss on the floor, break the wall of the house or try car-racing with police when drunk), I did not drink often. I liked alcohol quite a lot, though, and the fact that I rarely drank it had a little to do with the quality of alcohol available, a little to do with the need to watch out for my friends' tricks, and a whole lot to do with the fact that I mostly moved around by car. I drove so often and drank so rarely that most people who often saw me at the parties but did not know me well tended to think that I don't drink at all. I remember one party where I did not have my car with me and promptly got very drunk. Immediately I started getting a lot of questions and comments from a lot of people about having started drinking. "But I haven't started drinking," - I explained to them, - "I've always liked drinking, it's just that usually I am driving". The general reaction was "what's wrong with you? All the normal people drink and drive!" I am still not sure why not drinking at all was accepted in that group of people, but temporarily abstaining from alcohol for the sake of public safety was not. Go figure.

How Jews stopped stoning people for adultery, or how to improve your holy books

This is from a conversation in another place, but I figured I wanna repost it here.

Torah says that adulterers should be stoned (to be exact, only women's adultery was punishable but they stoned both the married woman and the man who had sex with her).

At some point some of the writers of Talmud figured it might not be such a bright idea after all. They couldn't say that Torah was wrong, of course, but they decided that stoning is such a serious punishment that you need really serious standards of proof: two witnesses. And since they were probably experienced men, they figured that the world is full of morons who'd get caught anyway, so they demanded an additional condition: the culprits have to have been warned in advance not to do it, also by two witnesses.

After that Jews totally stopped committing adultery in front of two disapproving witnesses, and the stoning fell into disuse.

Refugees: young men vs. families

In Finland a lot of people keep wondering why so many refugees are young men, and shouldn't young men stay wherever they are and fight whoever and leave the asylum-seeking to people who really need it and are really in danger, such as women and children.

This (both the critique and the answer) does not hold for all refugees, because a lot of refugees do arrive in family groups, but I find it weird that people don't understand that in a war zone young men are the most endangered group of people. It does not always go that way - sometimes the war is so genocidal that everyone is in equal danger, sometimes a city gets bombed with women and children and old people and men survive somewhere fighting in a trench, but for the most part young men are the people who usually get forcibly drafted by "their own side", and young men are the people who usually get killed by the other side just on suspicion of being combatants or potential combatants, no matter how civilian they might in fact be.

(Mind you, if I were a warlord who cared about the well-being of my own clan, I would kill the rival clan's women and children - provided I could protect my own from retaliation - and make the problem go away in a generation, but apparently in real life real warlords don't look that far ahead. Maybe it's a good thing that I am a software engineer and not a warlord... warlady... whatever.)

Anyway: I am not sure why it comes as a surprise to so many people, but in most wars young men tend to get killed more often than other demographic groups. No, I don't have sources. Pick a few of your favorite wars and look it up for each of them separately.

Mind that this does not mean that we should take all of them in - whether we should or shouldn't depends of who they are and how likely they are to integrate and how many there are, etc. I can certainly see the point of people who say that we should give preference to female refugees because of their lower crime rates. OTOH this would be against the equality of the sexes, of course, and also cause a bigger demographic change than taking an equal amount of men.

One interesting thing is the cultural differences on this subject among different western countries. Finns seem to approve of whole families of refugees more than of young men and to disapprove of leaving family members behind, and so do Americans. In Austria, OTOH, I met a lot of people who specifically disapproved of refugees "dragging old people with them", as they put it, as opposed to first settling down in a new place and then having old people come over with the new home all ready for them. Go figure.

From my own, relatives' and acquaintances' refugee experience I'd say that Finns and Americans are right on this one: leaving people behind is a bad, bad idea and should be done only when there is no choice (that is, it can be done if they slow everyone down so much that nobody gets away, or if they refuse to go). Leaving them behind in hope that the people who ran first would get things arranged and make the transition easier for the ones who come later has not worked well for most people I knew who've done it.

Keskustelutyylistä, osa 2

"Usein tietynlainen diskurssi on eräänlainen erottautumiskeino, eräänlainen ideologinen brandi."

OK.

"Eri ihmisillä on erilainen näkemys samojen puheenvuorojen trollaavuuden tasosta.

Ethnicity, citizenship, and culture

This is not so much in connection with the previous conversation about ethnicity as in connection with the various discussions about whether or not an immigrant can become a Finn. Most people seem to discuss the concpet Finn (a Finnish citizen) vs. Finn (person of Finnish ethnicity/culture). I think they are confusing the issue, because there are clearly three different concepts here: citizenship, ethnicity and culture.

1. Citizenship is a legal concept, and normally a binary one. Either you are a citizen, or you are not. (There are exceptions to this binariness, such as people who are nationals but not citizens of the USA, or the fact that some nations ban naturalized citizens from some high political offices, but for the most part citizenship is binary.) One person can have one citizenship, or several, or none at all. A person is usually either born with a citizenship/citizenships or acquires it through living in the country legally for a certain amount of years without causing trouble and then applying for it.

2. Ethnicity is a genetic or mythologically-genetic concept, in which Finns, for example, are descendants of of ancient Finnish tribes. (In practice, or course, the descendants of immigrants "blend" into Finnish ethnicity after suffuciently many generations.) Unlike citizenships, which are added to each other (a person with a French and a Finnish citizenship is not half a French citizen and half a Finnish citizen, but a full citizen of each), ethnicity is a single pie that can be divided in parts. A person whose one parent is ethnically French and one is ethnically Finnish is ethnically half-French and half-Finnish (they can, of course, choose to identify themselves with just one of these cultures, or both, or neither). Immigrants obviously do not become ethnically Finnish unless they were born so. Their descendants tend to become purely ethnically Finnish by the time the foreign ancestry is forgotten.

Unlike the existence of ethnic groups as such, individual ethnicity has a rather strong objective component to it, but in reality it's often best to take people's word for it, because guessing it is a rather uncertain business. People generally guess others' ethnicity by looks and name, with the result that a person one of whose grandparents is Bengali is identified as not-quite-Finnish easier than a person one of whose grandparents is Norwegian, and a person whose paternal grandfather is Spanish is idenitied as part-Spanish with more likelihood than a person whose maternal grandmother is Spanish.

Ethnicity often does have real genetic ramifications that have to be taken into account. If two Ashkenazi Jews are planning to have a baby, you do test them for Tay-Sachs disease, or at least you should, and if you are bringing a cake to a party full of ethnic Finns you do use low-lactose milk products in it, because you know that some of them will be lactose-intolerant.

3. Culture, or belonging to a particular culture, is a very complicated concept, and not a very clear one, but it is the most important one when speaking about whether of not immigrants will be able to assimilate and whether or not they will cause trouble. A foreigner can become culturally Finnish quickly, slowly or not at all, and it depends very much on the person him/herself. Culture is neither a binary concept, nor a one 100% pie to be divided between different cultures: a person can be born into one culture, or several, acquiring a new culture is a process that happens bit by bit, losing an old one is a much slower process that also happens bit by bit.

Concepts like "Finnish culture" are also somewhat difficult to define, because they mean different things to different Finns, and one has to think about how mainstream or non-mainstream a thing should be to be included. Is, for example, the culture of Finnish Roma a subset of Finnish culture, or should it be defined as its own thing.

I use "a person's culture" here to describe a skill: a knowledge and understanding of a particular culture, and ability and willingness to function according to its rules. Self-identification is a different issue: one can be perfectly capable of functioning and willing to function as a Finn, a German and a Brit but choose to identify with only one of the above. Sometimes people also choose to identify with a particular culture without actually having the requisite skill.

Sometimes cultures are badly incompatible, in the sense that things that are mandatory or highly desirable in one culture are unacceptable in the other. I think that most cultures disapprove to some degrees of their members acquiring other cultures, but some do so more than others and some less.

I think that when talking about the assimilation of immigrants the important questions are 1) whether they are open to the acquisition of a new culture at all, 2) whether their old culture has many things that are totally incompatible with the new culture, and 3) whether they will be willing to solve these conflicts in favor of the new culture. Ethnicity and even identity issues are a lot less relevant.

Objectivity and subjectivity

I've always thought that there is something lacking in the concepts of subjective and objective. Objective is roughly defined as "independent from anyone's perspective or state of mind" and subjective as "dependent on people's perspective or state of mind", which of course leaves out things that are dependent on some people' perspective but not on others'. I'd say that such things are subjective for some people and objective for others, but people who usually use these concepts would probably declare a fatwa against me, and such usage would be way too confusing.

For example, Anu and I are friends, and this is based entirely on the fact that we consider ourselves to be friends, which is our subjective opinion. To any outside observer it is, however, objective reality that they cannot argue with (or they can, of course, but they would be wrong).

Another problem with the usage of objective: a lot of people seem to use it to mean only natural phenomena (as in, described by natural sciences). Sorry, Finnsh law is just as objective a phenomenon as the law of gravity. It's written, anyone can read it for themselves, it does not change depending on the reader. The interpretation of it by lawyers can vary, but it, too, is an objectively observable phenomenon.

Or, say, that women on average prefer tall men to short. The preference is subjective to each woman and certainly does not occur in every woman, but the fact that women on average prefer taller men is objectively observable.

Finally there are phenomena that allow for a certain limited degree of subjectivity in observers. For example my eye color is (IMO) a combination of gray and green. If you look me in the eyes and tell me that they are just green, or just gray, or have some specks of blue or yellow, this is probably some normal difference in subjective color perception. If you say that they are blue, either your color vision is flawed beyond that which is normal, or the lighting is really weird. If you say they are brown, you are either pretty much color blind or have never actually seen my eyes, either of which disqualifies you from having an opinion on the subject. I would normally call colors an objectively observable phenomenon, but some small variations do depend on the observer.

Nature, the cause of depression

Countryside depresses me. I am ok for a day trip, and I can stand nature for several days in summer if I have good company, good facilities, and am more or less on the move, but staying for longer than that in a place where there are only forests or fields around makes me think of slashing my wrists and putting myself out of my misery. (I obviously don't actually do it, but get the hell out of there instead.)

Where does that come from? (I don't mean the dislike of countryside as such but such a strong reaction.) I am not generally depressed or particularly prone to depression. Do other people get this? Do some people get the same kind of thing in the cities?

I sometimes wonder how long it would take me to actually do it (if ever). No, not going to try to find out.

Embedded sound on webpages

After the newest update my Konqueror suddenly started playing the sound embedded on webpages. It was very annoying, and I turned it off, but why do people have embedded sound on webpages anyway? Has anyone ever seen a webpage where it was useful or desirable?

If I want a webpage to play me a song, I'll click on the damn song, thank you very much.

"No, kyllä Vera sentään edempänä esittää jotain perusteluja ja omia määritelmiään etnisyyden käsitteelle.

He molemmat voivat määritellä itsensä juutalaisiksi, jos kuuluvat juutalaiseen seurakuntaan.

"Juutalaisten yhteinen geeniperimä on pelkkä vitsi.

"Populaatio nimeltä "maailman juutalaiset" on geneettisesti hyvin epäyhtenäinen. Juutalaisten väittäminen geneettisesti yhtenäiseksi kansaksi on täysin naurettavaa."

Jotenkin kuitenkin tekee mieli kommentoida tätä Veran subjektivismia heittämällä hänelle takaisin hänen oma loppulauseensa "yleisesti ottaen omien näkemystensä synkronointi reaalimaailman tosiasioiden kanssa on suht. terveellinen harrastus".

Todellisuus on objektiivinen.

Goodbye, Saddam

Finally have seen the snuff movie. I think that the combination of camera cell phones and youtube is finally bringing executions to the viewing masses.

Lots of people have been talking/writing about Saddam's execution, mostly quite solemnly, often trying to reconcile their opposition to death penalty with their feeling that Saddam righly deserved it. But somehow, the only things that come to my mind are from South Park: bigger, longer and uncut: "It's been six weeks since Saddam Hussein was killed by a pack of wild boars and the world is still glad to be rid of him." I also find myself wondering whether or not he is dating Satan.
